Spirulina is the common name for a cyanobacterium, Arthrospria. It is also known as blue—green algae because it acts more like algae than a bacterium. It is used as a dietary supplement, and is especially valuable to a healthy diet because it contains an unusually high amount of protein: 55 to 77% of its dry weight is pure protein. This protein is a complete protein, meaning it contains all of the essential amino acids and is superior to typical plant protein. Spirulina contains several types of B vitamins, along with vitamin C, vitamin D and vitamin E. It is also rich in potassium, calcium, iron, selenium and zinc.
To use: Take one capsule with a meal three times per day, or as directed by your physician.
