Turmeric is native to India and southern Asia where it is extensively cultivated. Best known for its bright yellow color and spicy taste to lovers of Indian food, its medicinal value is not so well known. However, recent research has confirmed the effects traditionally associated in ancient practices in the treatment of digestive and liver problems. The herb has also been shown to inhibit blood—clotting, relieve inflammatory conditions and help lower cholesterol levels
This is a perennial herb about 2—3 ft tall with a short stem and tufts of erect leaves (simple and large). The rhizome is branched, ovoid and orange in colour. Flowers are pale yellow in spikes concealed by sheathing petioles.
Turmeric is known for its anti septic, anti—inflammatory properties. It helps prevent re—occurrence of diseases as well as gives protection from infectious diseases. Turmeric powder can be applied on wounds and cuts as an antiseptic. It can act as a thermogenic, bitter, blood purifier, expectorant, carminative, appetizer, laxative, diuretic, and stimulant. It also helps regulate disorderly functions of the body.
